Overview:
This portfolio showcases my growth in English 110 through multiple projects, including the Language & Literacy Narrative, Synthesis Essay, and translation exercises. Each assignment challenged me to think critically about language, culture, and storytelling.
What I Learned:
- Analyzing language and power: I gained a deeper understanding of how “proper English” and prescriptive rules influence whose voices are validated in literature and society. By examining texts across time I saw patterns showing how language both restricts and empowers.
- Synthesizing sources: I learned to connect multiple texts and ideas into cohesive arguments, moving beyond summaries to show patterns, contrasts, and implications. For example, linking Austen’s polished prose to Dickens’ use of dialect helped me explore how writers negotiate societal norms through style.
- Personal reflection: My Language & Literacy Narrative pushed me to analyze my own experiences with language barriers and identity. Reflecting on these moments helped me understand the connection between communication, belonging, and self-expression, which I then applied to analyzing literary works.
- Linguistic observation: I became more attuned to tone, dialect, code-switching, and context. Studying language across literature, historical sources, and online communication showed me how meaning shifts depending on audience, setting, and purpose.
- Learning in class: Being in class and hearing peers discuss their interpretations and experiences added a crucial dimension to my learning.
Revision Process:
- Early drafts often focused on summarizing content or describing events. Through revision, I learned to highlight analysis and synthesis, linking evidence to central claims and refining my arguments.
- Feedback helped me improve clarity, organization, and transitions, making connections between sources and ideas more explicit.
- I also learned to balance evidence and commentary, ensuring that quotations support my points rather than dominating the narrative.
Overall Growth:
This course strengthened my critical thinking, writing, and self-reflection. I now approach reading and writing with more attention to nuance, context, and voice, and I can better connect personal experiences to larger academic and cultural conversations.
